Take 1: The parents in Love, Simon confront their heteronormative bias and remain devoted to their boy. Not every parent does, so I am happy to see on-screen surrogates behave as I hope I will behave when/if I find myself in similar circumstances.
Take 2: It’s hard to be a suburban, White, technology savvy, (closeted) gay, male teen. Love, Simon embroiders this premise and offers a few notes of real feeling. Mostly, though, it’s a John Hughes movie with Nick Robinson playing Molly Ringwald’s part.
